New Album - Heroes to Zeroes
Heroes To Zeros released on Regal on April 26th
After a long journey of distillation from song concept through the final mixes, the self-produced third album from the Beta Band has arrived.
Heroes To Zeros, the culmination of 18 months work, sees the band take a more muscular approach to their songwriting both lyrically and musically.
With topical global issues of terrorism, war and governmental mediocrity weighing collectively on their minds, it’s not surprising that the songs here have a more aggressive bent to them than previous Beta Band recordings. Debut single Assessment sets the agenda with it’s duelling guitars and blaring brass and it’s a potency that is retained throughout the album. But whilst guitars may dominate Heroes To Zeros, there’s no escaping those signature Beta Band grooves and Mason’s hypnotic vocal.
Other stand out tracks include Out-Side, a tribal drum throw down featuring barking dogs, squawking gulls and chuffing trains; the organ-led and mantric Space Beatle; the thrashy, phased Liquid Bird and the beautiful Troubles.
An intrinsic part of the recording process, having witnessed the audience response to their live sets, was to capture that intangible live element in the studio and combine it with the digital process and they set about doing so by recording large parts of the album live.
As Steve Mason explains, “Heroes To Zeros represents a true marriage of samples, programmed beats and a live band. This is something we’ve been working towards since the beginning. We’ve carried on trying to hone our sound down to a pop song and are learning to make it tighter and more exciting”.
